Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this US Route 222 Comprehensive Transportation Needs Analysis Study is to identify the travel and transportation needs within the 15.5 mile corridor between Temple, in Berks County, and the Lehigh County line.

The study team has assessed a range of transportation improvements that could satisfy long-term safety, capacity and operational requirements of the corridor. It is one component in PENNDOT's overall program to improve Route 222 in Berks and Lehigh counties.

The end product of the Study is a Comprehensive Transportation Needs Analysis document that  identifies meaningful, cost-effective improvements that address the combination of transportation, community and environmental needs of the area.

The final document has been delivered to the county planning agency.

At the completion of the Study, state transportation officials, along with county and local planners and officials, will add individual projects to the long-range Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) for Berks County. Once included on the TIP, individual projects will be added to PENNDOT's 12-Year Program. Projects are then constructed when funding is available and when all additional environmental and engineering tasks are completed.

Public participation in the Study - and in the development of transportation needs and solutions for this corridor - will be through origin & destination surveys, public meetings and general oral and written comment.

The Study, and delivery of the Document, is expected to be completed in 2003.

June 2004 - PENNDOT's study of the US 222 corridor between Reading and Allentown found that heavy volume causes intersections to fail to move traffic at a sufficient rate to avoid congestion. Heavy truck traffic adds to the congestion along the busy corridor.   Click for a different view.
